Introduction

Roots and Wings thrives on the cooperation and communication between parents and staff to ensure a nurturing and safe environment in which our children can grow. Our child-oriented curriculum encourages the cognitive, emotional, social and physical growth of children as they play. The child/staff ratio will remain low, as 12 children is the absolute maximum number enrolled at any time. This provides ample time and opportunity for staff to address individual needs.

Roots and Wings is also committed to maintaining ethnic and cultural diversity and is supportive of nontraditional families.

Our History

Roots and Wings was founded in 1982 by a group of parents seeking quality, full-day, care for their young children. At that time, parents managed all the administrative aspects of the program. Roots and Wings operated in the Sunset Park/Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn from its inception until 1993, when it moved to Park Slope. Throughout its existence, Roots and Wings has been fortunate to have an extremely stable, committed, and caring staff.

In late 2004, Roots and Wings incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation under the name Roots and Wings Kids, Inc. Presently. Roots and Wings Kids, Inc. is operated by a three member Board of Directors that manages and performs all administrative aspects of the program. Two of these directors have been with the Roots and Wings program for over a decade.

Roots and Wings Kids. lnc. is licensed by New York State’s Office of Children and Family Services. Roots and Wings teachers are certified in Child/infant CPR and First Aid.

Our Philosophy

Roots and Wings promotes caring, non-coercive learning to help children along their way through toddlerhood, emphasizing:

Learning Skills: Children are encouraged to become more aware of their own emotions and how to express them.
Communication: Children are encouraged to communicate verbally and nonverbally, growing in their ability to make themselves understood and to understand others.
Motor Skills: Children get to practice gross and fine motor skills, embrace physical challenges, and move toward managing risks.
Failure and Success: Children are helped to negotiate setbacks confidently.

Teachers’ mindfulness and dedication assist children in moving forward in these areas, enabling all Roots and Wings kids to gain in self-confidence and take pleasure in who they are and what they can do.
